There are two types of electrical signalsthose being alternating current ACand direct current DC. With alternating current, the direction electricity flows throughout the circuit is constantly reversing. You may even say that it is alternating direction. The rate of reversal is measured in Hertz, which is the number of reversals per second.

So, when they say that the US power supply is 60 Hz, what they mean is that it is reversing times per second twice per cycle. With Direct Current, electricity flows in one direction between power and ground. In this arrangement there is always a positive source of voltage and ground 0V source of voltage.

You can test this by reading a battery with a multimeter. For great instructions on how to do this, check out Ladyada's multimeter page you will want to measure voltage in particular. Speaking of voltage, electricity is typically defined as having a voltage and a current rating. Voltage is obviously rated in Volts and current is rated in Amps. For instance, a brand new 9V battery would have a voltage of 9V and a current of around mA milliamps.

Electricity can also be defined in terms of resistance and watts. We will talk a little bit about resistance in the next step, but I am not going to be going over Watts in depth.

As you delve deeper into electronics you will encounter components with Watt ratings. It is important to never exceed the Wattage rating of a component, but fortunately that Wattage of your DC power supply can easily be calculated by multiplying the voltage and current of your power source.

Most basic electronic circuits use DC electricity. As such, all further discussion of electricity will revolve around DC electricity.Electronics for beginners is a topic I love. There are too many people out there trying to preach that electronics is hard.

Of course it takes time to become an expert. But you can start having fun, and build useful things pretty much right away. Or maybe something more advanced like a quadcopter or a mobile phone?

Do these steps, and you will be well on your way to building whatever gadget you are dreaming about. The first step to take, is to get a simple understanding of the basic concepts in electronics for beginners. Learn more about the basics of current, voltage and resistance. Schematic diagrams are like recipes for electronics. They tell you exactly how to connect the components to make a certain circuit. There are a gazillion schematic diagrams on the internet. So without knowing any theory, you can actually build some pretty advanced circuits.

As long as you know the practical steps on how to build a circuit. Just read a bit to get your curiosity started. Then move on to the next step.

All you need to do is follow the instructions. But, eventually you should free yourself from these instructions and start building circuits on your own. Start by building some circuits using breadboards and stripboards.

I recommend you to read it and do the steps to get comfortable with building circuits. They are one of the most useful tools in electronics. You can choose how deep you want to go at this step. Maybe you just want to read about the basics of microcontrollersor maybe you want to go deeper play around with some more advanced microcontroller topics for a while. One of the simplest ways to get started with microcontrollers is with Arduino.

Take on a project that you feel inspired by. Something you think would be really cool to make. By doing this, you will meet many challenges. And these challenges are good, because they will show you what you need to learn. And some useful circuit concepts, like the current limiting resistor.

A good resource for you, when starting your own project, is how to design your own schematics from scratch.Learn about electronics components and how to read and build circuits. You will also use the timer integrated circuit, learn how to use a multimeter and tips about soldering.
